आत्मानँ रथितं विद्धि शरीरँ रथमेव तु । बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रग्रहमेव च ॥ ३॥

ātmāna~ rathitaṃ viddhi śarīra~ rathameva tu । buddhiṃ tu sārathiṃ viddhi manaḥ pragrahameva ca ॥ 3॥

viddhi = know that; ātmānaṁ = the Self [the enjoyer of the fruits of karma]; rathinaṁ = is the rider of the chariot; śarīraṁ = the body; ratham eva = is indeed the chariot; tu = and; buddhiṁ = the intellect [characterised by determination]; viddhi = know [to be]; sārathiṁ = the charioteer; manaḥ = the mind [characterised by volition and doubt]; pragraham = is the bridle.
