यावद्वायुः स्थितो देहे तावज्जीवनं उच्यते । मरणं तस्य निष्क्रान्तिस्ततो वायुं निरोधयेत् ॥ २.३ ॥ |
yāvadvāyuḥ sthito dehe tāvajjīvanaṃ ucyate । maraṇaṃ tasya niṣkrāntistato vāyuṃ nirodhayet ॥ 2.3 ॥ |
Yāvat - as long as
Vāyuḥ - air, breath, Prana
Sthitaḥ - is located, placed
Dehe - in the body
Tāvat - as long as
Jīvanam - Life
Ucyate - is called
Maraṁaṁ - Death, Death
Tasya - this, that
Niṣkrāntiḥ - going out, turning, disappearing
Tataḥ - therefore
Vāyuṁ - air, breath
Nirodhayet - one should stop, locked || 3 ||

As long as vayu (breath, prana) remains in the body, the body is called alive. Death consists of the breath (pranavayu) disappearing. It is, therefore, necessary to retain the breath.
