चले वाते चलं चित्तं निश्चले निश्चलं भवेत् ।
योगी स्थाणुत्वं आप्नोति ततो वायुं निरोधयेत् ॥ २.२ ॥ |
cale vāte calaṃ cittaṃ niścale niścalaṃ bhavet ।
yogī sthāṇutvaṃ āpnoti tato vāyuṃ nirodhayet ॥ 2.2 ॥ |
Cale - unsteady, mobile
Vāte - air, wind, breath
Calaṁ - unstable, mobile
Cittaṁ - spirit, mind consciuosnes, soul
Niçcale - immovability
Niścalaṁ - to immovable
Bhavet - is, becomes, happens
Yogī - yogi
Sthāṇu-tvam - motionlessness
Āpnoti - reached, achieve
Tataḥ - therefore
Vāyuṁ - breath, air
Nirodhayet - one should retain || 2 ||

The mind acts by mobilizing váta (air, breathing), and by stabilizing (stopping) it the mind becomes stable. By means of this stable mind and váta, the root phase (steadiness of mind) is achieved. Therefore váta should be restrained.
