घनं उत्सृज्य वा सूक्ष्मे सूक्ष्मं उत्सृज्य वा घने ।
रममाणं अपि क्षिप्तं मनो नान्यत्र चालयेत् ॥ ४.८८ ॥ |
ghanaṃ utsṛjya vā sūkṣme sūkṣmaṃ utsṛjya vā ghane ।
ramamāṇaṃ api kṣiptaṃ mano nānyatra cālayet ॥ 4.88 ॥ |
Ghanam: (the) deep, mighty (Ghana)
Utsṛjya: after (the spirit) has left (ud + sṛj)
Vā: either ("or", Va)
Sūkṣme: in the high, subtle (sound, sukshma)
Sūkṣmam: (the) high, subtle (sound)
Utsṛjya: after (the spirit) has left
Vā: or
Ghane: at the deep (sound)
Ramamāṇam: (if he dwells), rests, delights (ram)
Api: even, even, itself (Api)
Kṣiptaṃ: (the) scattering ("scattered", Kshipta)
Manas: spirit (manas)
Na: not (Na)
Anyatra: to another object ("elsewhere", Anyatra)
Cālayet: one should be moved ("move", cal) || 88 ||

Leaving the loudest, taking up the softest, and then leaving the softest and taking up the loudest - practising thus, the distracted mind does not wander elsewhere.
