उत्तानं शबवद्भूमौ शयनं तच्छवासनम् । शवासनं श्रान्तिहरं चित्तविश्रान्तिकारकम् ॥ १.३४ ॥ |
uttānaṃ śabavadbhūmau śayanaṃ tacchavāsanam ।
śavāsanaṃ śrāntiharaṃ cittaviśrāntikārakam ॥ 1.34 ॥ |
Uttānaṁ - stretched on the back;
Śava-vad - like a corpse, deadbody;
Bhūmau - on the earth;
Śayanaṁ - lying, resting;
Tacha - this is, like that is;
(Śa)vāsanam - Shavásana;
Śava-āsanaṁ - Shavásana;
Śrānti - fatigue;
Haraṁ - eliminates, takes away;
Citta - the Spirit, mind;
Viśrānti - recreation, rest, relaxation;
Kārakam - causes, make, do.

Lying down on your back with straight legs resting on the ground, like a corpse, is called Shavásana. This relieves fatigue and gives the mind a rest.
