हेतुद्वयं तु चित्तस्य वासना च समीरणः ।
तयोर्विनष्ट एकस्मिन्तौ द्वावपि विनश्यतः ॥ ४.२२ ॥ |
hetudvayaṃ tu cittasya vāsanā ca samīraṇaḥ ।
tayorvinaṣṭa ekasmintau dvāvapi vinaśyataḥ ॥ 4.22 ॥ |
Hetu: causes (Hetu)
Dvayaṁ: (there are) two (a "pair", Dvaya)
Tu: but (Tu)
Cittasya: (for the activity) of the mind (chitta)
Vāsanā: (unconscious) spiritual impressions (Vasana)
Ca: and (Cha)
Samīraḥaḥ: (the) life breath, breath, Prana ("wind", Samirana)
Tayoḥ: by both (Tad)
Vinaṣṭe: vanished (vinashta)
Ekasmin: (if) one (eka)
Tau: the (Tad)
Dvāu: both (others, Dvi)
Api: also (Api)
Vinaśyataḥ: disappear (vi + naśh) || 22 ||

There are two causes of mental activity: (1) Vâsanâ (desires) and (2) movement of Vayu (the Prâna). The destruction of the one is the destruction of both.
