ज्ञानं कुतो मनसि सम्भवतीह तावत्
प्राणोऽपि जीवति मनो म्रियते न यावत् ।
प्राणो मनो द्वयं इदं विलयं नयेद्यो
मोक्षं स गच्छति नरो न कथंचिदन्यः ॥ ४.१५ ॥ |
jñānaṃ kuto manasi sambhavatīha tāvat
prāṇo'pi jīvati mano mriyate na yāvat ।
prāṇo mano dvayaṃ idaṃ vilayaṃ nayedyo
mokṣaṃ sa gacchati naro na kathaṃcidanyaḥ ॥ 4.15 ॥ |
Jñānaṁ: knowledge (of the self, Jnana)
Kutaḥ: as ("where", Kutas)
Manasi: in the spirit (manas)
Sambhavati: is possible (sam + bhū)
Iha: in this world ("here", Iha)
Tāvat: as long as (Tavat)
Práḥaḥ: the lifejacket (prana)
Api: both ("also", Api)
Jīvati: living (jīv)
Manas: (as well as the) spirit
Mriyate: dies (mṛ)
Na: not (Na)
Yāvat: like (Yavat)
Prāḥaḥ: lifejacket
Manas: (and) spirit
Dvayam: two ("couple", Dvaya)
Idaṁ: this (s, idam)
Vilayaṁ: (to) the disappearance ("resolution", Vilaya)
Nayet: brings ("leads", nī)
Yaḥ: who (yad)
Mokṁaṁ: (to) liberation (Moksha)
Saḥ: the (Tad)
Gacchati: arrives ("goes", gam)
Naraḥ: Man (Nara)
Na: not
Kathañ-cid: in some (other) way ("somehow," Kathanchid)
Anyaḥ: another (anya) || 15 ||

How can it be possible to achieve knowledge when the Prâna is still active and the mind has not yet died? Nobody
can achieve moksha except those who can make their Prâna and their mind neutral.
