उदरे पश्चिमं तानं नाभेरूर्ध्वं च कारयेत् ।
उड्डीयानो ह्यसौ बन्धो मृत्युमातङ्गकेसरी ॥ ३.५७ ॥ |
udare paścimaṃ tānaṃ nābherūrdhvaṃ ca kārayet ।
uḍḍīyāno hyasau bandho mṛtyumātaṅgakesarī ॥ 3.57 ॥ |
Udare: in the abdomen (area, Udara)
Paścimaṁ: to the rear (Pashchima)
Tānaṁ: stretching (Tana)
Nābheḥ: of the navel, of the navel (Nabhi)
Ūrdhvaṁ: upwards, upwards (Urdhva)
Ca: and (Cha)
Kārayet: one lead out ("let go," Kara)
Uḍḍīyānaḥ: Uddiyana (the "letting")
Hi: known, certainly (Hi)
Asau: this (asau)
Bandhaḥ: closure (bandha)
Mṛtyu: (of) death (Mrityu)
Mātaṅga: (opposite the) elephant (Matanga)
Kesarī: (is like a lion) (Kesarin) || 57 ||

The belly above the navel is pressed backwards towards the spine. This Uddiyâna Bandha is like a lion attacking the
elephant of Death.
