अथ उड्डीयानबन्धः
बद्धो येन सुषुम्णायां प्राणस्तूड्डीयते यतः ।
तस्मादुड्डीयनाख्योऽयं योगिभिः समुदाहृतः ॥ ३.५५ ॥ |
atha uḍḍīyānabandhaḥ
baddho yena suṣumṇāyāṃ prāṇastūḍḍīyate yataḥ ।
tasmāduḍḍīyanākhyo'yaṃ yogibhiḥ samudāhṛtaḥ ॥ 3.55 ॥ |
Atha: now (follows, Atha)
Uḍḍīyāna-bandhaḥ: Uddiyana Bandha
Baddhaḥ: fixed, controlled ("bound", Baddha)
Yena: with this bandha ("with which", Yad)
Suṇumṇāyāṁ: in the Sushumna
Prāḥaḥ: (the) life energy (Prana)
Tu: but (Tu)
Uḍḍīyate: (and then) "auffliegt" (ud + ḍī)
Yataḥ: because (Yatas)
Tasmāt: therefore (tasmat)
Uḍḍīyana: Uḍḍīyana (the "letting", Uddiyana)
Ākhyaḥ: (with the) designation (Akhya)
Ayaṁ: this (closure, Ayam)
Yogibhiḥ: from the yogis
Samudāhḥtaḥ: has been named (Samudahrita) || 55 ||

Uddiyâna Bandha is so called because the great bird Prâna, when tied to it, flies without becoming fatigued. This is explained below.
