अथ आसनम्
हठस्य प्रथमाङ्गत्वादासनं पूर्वं उच्यते ।
कुर्यात्तदासनं स्थैर्यं आरोग्यं चाङ्गलाघवम् ॥ १.१९ ॥ |
atha āsanam
haṭhasya prathamāṅgatvādāsanaṃ pūrvaṃ ucyate ।
kuryāttadāsanaṃ sthairyaṃ ārogyaṃ cāṅgalāghavam ॥ 1.19 ॥ |
Atha - now;
Āsanam - (the) body position;
Haṭhasya - steady body, strength of body;
Prathama-aṅgatvād - for that is the first part or limb;
Āsanaṁ - posture (body positions);
Pūrvam - first;
Ucyate - is called or taught;
Kuryāt - effects or begin with;
Tad - this;
Āsanaṁ - Asana (the totality of the positions to be taught);
Sthairyam - (physical and mental) strength, stamina;
Ārogyaṁ - Health;
Ca - and;
Aṅga - part or limbs;
Lāghavam - Lightness.

The first accessory of Hatha Yoga is the ásana, so it is described first. It should be practiced in order to gain a steady posture, health (being without disease) and lightness of all parts of the body.
