तपः सन्तोष आस्तिक्यं दानं ईश्वरपूजनम् ।
सिद्धान्तवाक्यश्रवणं ह्रीमती च तपो हुतम् ।
नियमा दश सम्प्रोक्ता योगशास्त्रविशारदैः ॥ १.१८ ॥ |
tapaḥ santoṣa āstikyaṃ dānaṃ īśvarapūjanam ।
siddhāntavākyaśravaṇaṃ hrīmatī ca tapo hutam ।
niyamā daśa samproktā yogaśāstraviśāradaiḥ ॥ 1.18 ॥ |
Tapas - practice;
Santoḥaḥ - satisfaction;
Āstikyaṁ - Belief in Brahma;
Dānam - charity, giving, donations, offerings;
Īśvara - Lord, God;
Pūjana - worship;
Siddhānta - textbooks, principles;
Vākya - the teachings, statements of teacher;
Śravaṁaṁ - hearing;
Hrī - pertinents;
Mati - intellectual thinking;
Ca - and;
Tapaḥ - practice;
ahutam - agnihotra;
Niyamāḥ - (are) Niyamas;
Daśa - ten;
Samproktāḥ - which are called or said;
Yoga-śāstra - (in the) yoga writings;
Viśāradaiḥ - from those who are experts.

The ten niyamas mentioned by those proficient in the textbooks of yoga are: 1. taking difficult action, 2. satisfaction, 3. trust, 4. to donate - to give, 5. prayers, religious worship, etc., 6. listening to wise discourses about the principles (and not listening to nonsense), 7. respecting the nature of others, 8. intellectual thinking, 9. constant action, and 10. Yagña - agnihotra (fire ceremony).
