अथ यमनियमाः
अहिंसा सत्यं अस्तेयं ब्रह्मचर्यं क्षमा धृतिः । दयार्जवं मिताहारः शौचं चैव यमा दश ॥ १.१७ ॥ |
atha yamaniyamāḥ
ahiṃsā satyaṃ asteyaṃ brahmacaryaṃ kṣamā dhṛtiḥ । dayārjavaṃ mitāhāraḥ śaucaṃ caiva yamā daśa ॥ 1.17 ॥ |
Atha - now;
Yama - observances (purification of mind);
Niyamāḥ - rules (purification of actions);
Ahiṁsā - non-violence;
Satyam - Truthfulness;
Asteyaṁ - not stealing;
Brahmacarya - following of root tattva (Brahman);
Kṣamā - Forgiveness;
Dhritiḥ - power of mind, inner strength for endurance, determination;
Dayā - compassion, mercifulness;
Ārjavaṁ - sincerity, meekness, humbleness;
Mita-āhāraḥ - proper food;
Śaucaṁ - purity, cleanliness;
Ca - and;
Eva - certainly;
Yamāḥ - Yama;
Daśa - (these are) the ten.

The ten rules of conduct are: Ahimsá - non-harm, Satyam - truth, Asteyam - non-stealing, Brhamacharya - following Brahma, Kshama - respecting nature, Dhrti - patience, Daya - compassion (mercy), Arjavam - making pure, sincere requests, Mityahar - appropriate food (comprehending which food is bad and which is correct), and Shauch - cleanliness.
