kaṇṭhe bandhaṃ samāropya dhārayedvāyuṃ ūrdhvataḥ । yathā daṇḍahataḥ sarpo daṇḍākāraḥ prajāyate ॥ 3.11 ॥

Kahe: in the throat (Kantha) Bandhaṁ: (the) closure (Bandha, i.e., Jalandhara Bandha) Samāropya: putting (sam + ā + rest) Dhārayet: he holds (breath and guide, dhṛi) Vāyum: (the life) breath, Prana ("wind", Vayu) Ūrdhva-tas: (by setting Mula Bandha) to the top (Urdhva) Yathā: (so) as (yatha) Daṇḍa: (the one with a) stick (Danda) Hataḥ: beaten ("was", Hata) Sarpaḥ: (a) snake (Sarpa) Daṇḍa: (a) stick Ākāraḥ: (the) form, form (Akara) Prajāyate: accepts ("will", continuation in verse 12, pra + jan) || 11 ||

By stopping the throat (through Jâlandhara Bandha) the inhaled air is carried downward. Just as a snake struck with a stick becomes straight like a stick, in the same way the shakti (sushumnâ) becomes straight at once when the throat is stopped. Then the Kundalinî seems to die and, draining away from the Idâ and the Pingalâ, enters the sushumnâ (the middle passage).
