प्राणायामस्त्रिधा प्रोक्तो रेचपूरककुम्भकैः । सहितः केवलश्चेति कुम्भको द्विविधो मतः ॥ २.७१ ॥ |
prāṇāyāmastridhā prokto recapūrakakumbhakaiḥ । sahitaḥ kevalaśceti kumbhako dvividho mataḥ ॥ 2.71 ॥ |
Prāṇa-ayāmaḥ - endless vitality
Tridhā - in three ways
Proktaḥ - is taught, said
Reca - exhalation
Pūraka - Inhalation
Kumbhakaiḥ - by retention of inhaled breath
Sahitaḥ - with (prana, brahma)
Kevalaḥ - only (brahma, soul)
Ca - and
Iti - so, thus
Kumbhakaḥ - retention of inhaled breath
Dvividhaḥ - of two kinds (Dvividha)
Mataḥ - of thoughts || 71 ||

There are three kinds of Pranayama: Pûraka (intake), Rechaka (release) and Kumbhaka (suspension). Kumbhaka is considered to be of two types: Sahita (with breath) and Kewala (without breath).
