| Bhagavadgíta,-अष्टमोऽध्यायः । अक्षरब्रह्मयोगः , (S.-1, Ch.-8, V.-24) |
अग्निर्ज्योतिरहः शुक्लः षण्मासा उत्तरायणम् ।तत्र प्रयाता गच्छन्ति ब्रह्म ब्रह्मविदो जनाः ॥ ८-२४॥ |
agnirjyotirahaḥ śuklaḥ ṣaṇmāsā uttarāyaṇam । tatra prayātā gacchanti brahma brahmavido janāḥ ॥ 8-24॥ |
agnis (m. nom. sg.), fire, god of fire. jyoti (n. nom. sg.), brightness, bright. ahar (n. nom. sg.), day. suklah (n. nom. sg.), the bright lunar fort-night. ṣaṇmāsā (m. nom. pl.), six months. uttarāyaṇam (n. nom. sg.), upper going of the sun, i.e. the northern phase of the sun. tatra, there, thither. prayātā (m. nom. pI. pr. participle pra .Jyti) , departing, dying. gacchanti (3rd pI. pr. indic. act. .J gam), they go, they attain. brahma (n. acc. sg.), to Brahman, Brahman. brahmavido (m. nom. pl.), Brahman knowing. janah (m. nom. pl.), men.

Those who know the Supreme Brahman pass away from the world through
the God of fire, God of light, God of daytime, God of the bright fortnight,
and God of six months in which Sun travels in the north; and travelling thus,
they attain the Supreme Lord (Brahman). ||8-24||
