Bhagavadgíta,-6. ātmasaṃyamayogaḥ आत्मसंयमयोगः , (S.-1, Ch.-6, V.-6)

बन्धुरात्मात्मनस्तस्य येनात्मैवात्मना जितः ।अनात्मनस्तु शत्रुत्वे वर्तेतात्मैव शत्रुवत् ॥ ६-६॥

bandhurātmātmanastasya yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ । anātmanastu śatrutve vartetātmaiva śatruvat ॥ 6-6॥



बन्धु = bandhus (m. nom. sg.), friend, companion, relative.; 

आत्मा = atma (m. nom. sg.), self.; 

आत्मन = atmana (m. gen. sg.), of the self.; 

तस्य = tasya (m. gen. sg.), of him, of this.; 

येन = yena (m. inst. sg.), by whom.; 

आत्मा = atma (m. nom. sg.), self.; 

एव = eva, indeed (used as a rhythmic filler).; 

आत्मन = atmana (m. inst. sg.), by the self.; 

जितः = jitas (m. nom. sg. p. pass. participle *ji), conquered, subdued, controlled.; 

अनात्मन = anatmanas (m. gen. sg.), of the not-self, of the unconquered self, (as BV cpd.) for him whose self is not.; 

तु = tu, indeed, but, however.; 

शत्रुत्वे = śatrutve (m. loco sg.), in enmity, in rivalry, in hostility.; 

वर्तेत = varteta (3rd sg. optative mid . *vrt), it should exist, it might exist.; 

आत्मा = atma (m. nom. sg.), self.; 

एव = eva, indeed (used as a rhythmic filler).; 

शत्रुवत् = satruvat (n. nom. sg.), like an enemy, in the manner of an enemy.



To him, who has subdued his self by the mind, his own self acts as the friend, but to him, who has not subdued the mind, his own self acts as the enemy. ||6-6||
