Bhagavadgita,-अर्जुनविषादयोगः arjunaviṣādayogaḥ, (S.-1, Ch.-1, V.-13) |
ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पणवानकगोमुखाः। सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत्॥१-१३॥ |
tataḣśaṅkhāśčabherjaśčča paṇavānakagomukhāḣ । sahasaivābhjahanjanta sa śabdastumulo 'bhavat ॥1-13॥ |
ततः tataḥ, = then, thereupon, from thence.; शङ्खाश् śaṅkhāś (m. nom. pl.), = conch horns.; च ca, = and.; भेर्यश् bheryaś (f. nom. pl.), = kettledrums.; च ca, = and.; पणवा paṇavā (m.), = cymbal, drum.; अनक ānaka (m.), = drum.; गोमुखाः gomukhāḥ (m. nom. pl.), = trumpets, lit. "bull mouths" or "bull faces" (the plural refers to the whole compound).; (पणवानकगोमुखाः paṇavānakagomukhāḥ, m. nom. pI., DV cpd. the cymbals, drums and trumpets.); सहस sahasa (n. inst. sg.), = suddenly, quickly, all at once.; एेेव eva, = indeed (used as a rhythmic filler).; अभ्यहन्यन्त abhyahanyanta (3rd. pI. imperf. pass. abhi.*han), they were struck, they sounded.; स sa (m. nom. sg.), = the, this.; शब्द sabda (m. nom. sg.), = sound, syllable, up-roar.; तुमुल tumula (m. nom. sg.), = tumultuous, noisy.; ऽभवत् abhavat (3rd sg. imperf. act . .*bhu), = it was, it became. |
After that, conch shells, kettledrums, bugles, trumpets, drums and horns were all suddenly sounded and the combined vibrations were terrific. ||1-13||
