साधनपाद,-Sādhana-Pāda, (S.-0, Ch.-2, V.-14)

ते ह्लाद परितापफलाः पुण्यापुण्यहेतुत्वात् ॥१४॥

te hlāda paritāpa-phalāḥ puṇya-apuṇya-hetutvāt ॥14॥

te = they, those (referring to those who take birth, as in the last sutra)

hlada-paritapa-phalah = experiencing pleasure and pain as fruits (hlada = pleasure, delight;

paritapa = pain, agony, anguish;

phalah = fruits)

punya = virtuous, meritorious, benevolent

apunya = non-virtuous, vice, bad, wicked, evil, bad, demerit, non-meritorious

hetutvat = having as their cause (the punya or apunya)

The outcome of an action is felicitous or infelicitous depending on whether the foundation is successful or unsuccessful. ||14||
