आदौ जलधिजीमूतभेरीझर्झरसम्भवाः ।
मध्ये मर्दलशङ्खोत्था घण्टाकाहलजास्तथा ॥ ४.८५ ॥ |
ādau jaladhijīmūtabherījharjharasambhavāḥ ।
madhye mardalaśaṅkhotthā ghaṇṭākāhalajāstathā ॥ 4.85 ॥ |
Ādau *: at the beginning (sounds heard, Adi)
Jaladhi: (the) ocean (jaladhi)
Jīmūta: (the thunderstorm) cloud (Jimuta)
Bherī: (the) boiler-drum (Bheri)
Jharjhara: (the) Jharjhara (called drum)
Sambhavāḥ: (similar to the sounds) ("whose origin is", Sambhava)
Madhye: in the middle (stage one hears sounds, Madhya)
Mardala: (similar to those from the) Mardala (called drum)
Śaṅkha: (and the) muschelhorn (Shankha)
Utthāḥ: sound ("arise", Uttha)
Ghaṇṭā: (the from the) bell (Ghanta)
Kāhala-jāḥ: (the) horn (kahala) ("born" sounds, Jan)
Tathā: and, likewise (Tatha) || 85 ||

In the first stage, the sounds are surging, thundering like the beating of kettle drums and jingling bells. In the
intermediate stage, they are like those produced by conch shells, mridanga, bells, etc.
