लयो लय इति प्राहुः कीदृशं लयलक्षणम् । अपुनर्वासनोत्थानाल्लयो विषयविस्मृतिः ॥ ४.३४ ॥ |
layo laya iti prāhuḥ kīdṛśaṃ layalakṣaṇam । apunarvāsanotthānāllayo viṣayavismṛtiḥ ॥ 4.34 ॥ |

Prāhuḥ: say (many, pra + ah)
Kīdṛśaṃ: how, what kind (kidrisha)
Laya: (from) Laya
Lakṇaṇam: (is the) definition (Lakshana)
Apunar: no more, not again (done, apunar)
Vāsanā: (the unconscious) impressions (Vasana)
Utthānāt: due to the fact that the appearance, appearance (Utthana)
Layaḥ: resolution, absorption (is that)
Viṣaya *: (the) objects of the senses, (the) meditation object (Vishaya)
Vismḥtiḥ *: Forgetting, Nesses (Vismriti) || 34 || |
Laya is simply the forgetting of the sense-objects, after which the Vâsanâs (desires) do not rise into existence again. |
