न चैतद्विद्मः कतरन्नो गरीयो यद्वा जयेम यदि वा नो जयेयुः । यानेव हत्वा न जिजीविषाम- स्तेऽवस्थिताः प्रमुखे धार्तराष्ट्राः ॥२- ६॥

na caitadvidmaḥ kataranno garīyo yadvā jayema yadi vā no jayeyuḥ । yāneva hatvā na jijīviṣāma- ste'vasthitāḥ pramukhe dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ ॥2- 6॥

न na, = not. च ca, = and.; एैतद etad (n. acc. sg.), = this.; द्द्द्विद्मः vidmas (rst pI. pr. indic. act. *vid), = we know.; कतरत katarat (n. acc. dual), = which of two?; nas (dat. pl.), = of us, to us, for us.; गरीयो gariyas (comparative), = heavier, more precious, more important, preferable.; यद्वा yadva, = whether, if, if either.; जयेम jayema (1st pI. opt. act. .*ji), we should conquer, we should prevail.; यदि yadi, = if.; वा va, = or.; नो nas (acc. pl.), = us.; जयेयुः jayeyus (3rd pI. opt. act. .*ji) , = they should conquer, they should be victorious over.; यान yan (m. acc. pl.), = whom.; एव eva, = indeed (used as a rhythmic filler).; हत्वा hatva (gerund .*han), = killing, having killed.; न na, = not.; जिजीविषाम jijīviṣāma (rst pI. desiderative act. .*jiv), = we desire to live.; स्ते te (m. nom. pl.), they.; ऽवस्थिताः avasthitah (m. nom. pI. p. pass. participle ava .*stha) = standing, arrayed in battle order, arrayed.; प्रमुखे pramukhe (n. loco sg.), = face to face, before us.; धार्तराष्ट्राः Dhartarastrah (m. nom. pl.), = the Sons of dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ.
