| Bhagavadgíta,-ज्ञानकर्मसंन्यासयोगः jñānakarmasaṃnyāsay, (S.-1, Ch.-4, V.-29) |
अपाने जुह्वति प्राणं प्राणेऽपानं तथापरे । प्राणापानगती रुद्ध्वा प्राणायामपरायणाः ॥ ४-२९॥ |
apāne juhvati prāṇaṃ prāṇe'pānaṃ tathāpare । prāṇāpānagatī ruddhvā prāṇāyāmaparāyaṇāḥ ॥ 4-29॥ |
अपाने (m. loco sg.), in exhalation, in the ab-dominal breath (the Hindus believed in two breaths: the vital breath (pral).a), and the abdominal breath (apana), supposed to have been breathed through the anus, though the two terms were also used for inhalation and exhalation respectively, which is their meaning here).; जुह्वति = juhvati (3rd pI. pr. indic. act. *hu) , they offer, they sacrifice.; प्राण = prāṇaṃ (m. acc. sg.), inhalation, vital breath.; प्राणे = prāṇe (m. loco sg.), in inhalation, in the vital breath.; ऽपानं = apānaṃ (m. acc. sg.), exhalation, the abdom-inal breath.; तथा = tathai, thus, also.; आपरे = apare (m. nom. pl.), some, others.; प्राणापानगती = prāṇāpānagatī (f. acc. dual), the paths of in-halation and exhalation.; रुद्ध्वा = ruddhvā (gerund .J 2 rudh), restraining.; प्राण = prāṇa (l (m.), vital breath, inhalation.; आयाम = āyāma (m. from ii *yam), control, stopping.; परायणाः = parāyaṇāḥ (m. nom. pI. ifc.), intent upon. (प्राणायामपरायणाःprāṇāyāmaparāyaṇāḥ m. nom. pI., TPcpd, intent on breath control.) |
Some offer the incoming breath (Pranavayu) in the outgoing; similarly,
others offer the outgoing breath (Apanavayu) in the incoming, as sacrifice.
While some others stop the course of the incoming and outgoing breaths,
and become absorbed in the control of breath. ||4-29||
