अर्जुन उवाच ।ज्यायसी चेत्कर्मणस्ते मता बुद्धिर्जनार्दन ।तत्किं कर्मणि घोरे मां नियोजयसि केशव ॥ ३-१॥

arjuna uvāca ।jyāyasī cetkarmaṇaste matā buddhirjanārdana ।tatkiṃ karmaṇi ghore māṃ niyojayasi keśava ॥ 3-1॥

अर्जुन = arjunas (m. nom. sg.), Arjuna.; 

उवाच = uvaca (3rd sg. perf. act. :.Jvac), he said, he spoke.; 

ज्यायसी = jyayasi (f. nom. sg. comparative), better, superior, larger, stronger.; 

चेद = ced, if.; 

कर्म = karmanas (n. abl. sg.), than action, than deeds.; 

ते = te (gen. sg.), of thee, thy.; 

मता = mata (f. nom. sg.), thought, idea, conviction.; 

बुद्धि = buddhi (f. nom. sg.), intelligence, enlighten-ment, mental determination.; 

जनार्दन = janardana, (m. voc. sg.), Mover of Men, Agitator of Men, epithet of Krishna.; 

तद = tad (n. nom. sg.), then.; 

किम = kim (n. nom. sg. interrog.), what? why?; 

कर्मणि = karmani (n. loco sg.), in action, to action.; 

घोरे = ghore (n. loco sg.), terrible, frightful, awful, venerable, sublime.; 

मां = mam (acc. sg.), me, to me.; 

नियोजयसि = niyojayasi (2nd sg. pro indic. causative act. ni *yuj), thou causest to yoke, thou urgest. ; 

केशव = keshava (m. voc. sg.), 0 Handsome Haired One, epithet of Krishna.
