Dinacharya - daily regimen |
Now I will recite the Dinacharya chapter, as recounted by Atreya and other sages. To protect life, a healthy person should get up from bed at Brahma Muhurtha. |
Commentary This verse is about dinacharya. Din means day, charya is regimen, in other words it is about the daily regimen. In Ayurveda, dinacharya is considered as a very important action because it results into the lifestyle which finally manifests on the material level in the body, both in the positive and the negative way. Our health and diseases depend on our daily regimen. Within dinacharya, Ayurveda sets order to waking up, acting and sleep. The day begins with waking up and the verse suggests that we should wake up at the time of brahma muhurta. It is a period of early morning hours just before sunrise. One should be up and around before sunrise. Yoga has many explanations of brahma muhurta - more or less it is the time when nature around us ia waking up and a person in harmony with nature should wake up as well. Not only beings, but trees, rivers, woods, meadows etc. adapt to this time as well. Today, people living in an apartment house at a building estate or people living in such a geographic zone where the sun is hidden for a week, nature sleeps up to noon, it is difficult to connect, tune to brahma muhurta. In such cases we can understand the verse so that a person should not sleep too much and wake up late. This results in a slow start and lazy daily regime. |
