Commentary The verse enumerates the qualities of Pitta which consists of the Fire and Water elements. In the body, it is present as these seven qualities (guny). It is evident that it is our enzymes and hormones that constantly transform our tissues (metabolism). Pitta is a part of our circulatory system at the cellular level. In other words, a tissue cannot change itself, the metabolic process is impossible without the presence of Pitta. Similarly, a tissue cannot move without the presence of Vata. These forces are about transformation and transportation. Almost everything to do with the mind is a Vata matter, and almost everything to do with the metabolism is a Pitta matter. It is important to understand the proportion between these forces. Vata initiates action, it is the beginning of the passions that drive our lives. The force of life is pranvayu, the main seat of which is in the mind, and the presence of mind is distributed throughout the entire body. At the physical level this is about nerves, which govern the physical activity of the body, and the hormones are also involved. When we perceive the actions of the body, its language, we can understand the desires that are driving the person. More than half of a person's life in the body is governed by the hormones and the rest of the life is governed by the mind and its desires. There is the central nervous system and the endocrine system are the main governors. The hormones and nerves are absolutely omnipresent in the body. The binary nature of the like/dislikes flows through the body in this system. This is the basic tension of the systems in the physical body. The life itself is imperceptible. The sequence is that there is first the spark of Vata, the transformation happens through Pitta, and the result is Kapha, a trace at the material level, like the ashes left after a fire. The past cannot be corrected. Medicine systems that restrict themselves to what can be perceived by the senses and measurement are like systems working with the shell of a snail and not the living body of the snail itself. The hidden, invisible and yet existing snail is what Ayurveda works with. Diagnosis is about the past, from which we should learn in order to take future action, which can include changes that transform.
