तेभ्यो tébhjó =.....; ऽति-विप्रकीर्णेभ्यः Ati-viprakírṇébhjaḣ = very extensive; प्रायः prájaḣ = abundantly, richly; सार-तरो sára-taró = more rare; उच्चयः uččajaḣ = to add to;

क्रियते krijaté = to become; ऽष्टाङ्ग-हृदयं Aṣṭáńga-hṛdajaṁ = The Eight Core Parts; ना ná = no, not; अति ati = extremely, very; संक्षेप saṁkšépa = brief, short; विस्तरम् vistaram = detailed.

This verse describes the Asthanga Hridayam.

From these Ayurvedic writings, which are quite vast and therefore very difficult to study, the essence has been collected and presented in the Ashtanga Hridayam, which is neither too short nor too long.

Commentary

Just as we cannot eat endlessly at one sitting, it is best to serve Ayurvedic wisdom in reasonably-sized portions so people can absorb it. The Ashtanga Hridayam is like a distillation of the point of Ayurveda. Ashta means eight and tang means parts. The eight parts are:  the beginning of the physical body itself, the phase of birth and childhood, the environment where the person lives, the upper part of the body (the anatomy of the abdomen and its structures), surgery, toxins (waste), the aging and maturation process, and reproductive capacity. These eight parts of human life are summarized here.
