तत्र धौतिः चतुरङ्गुलविस्तारं हस्तपञ्चदशायतम् । गुरूपदिष्टमार्गेण सिक्तं वस्त्रं शनैर्ग्रसेत् । पुनः प्रत्याहरेच्चैतदुदितं धौतिकर्म तत् ॥ २.२४ ॥ |
tatra dhautiḥ caturaṅgulavistāraṃ hastapañcadaśāyatam । gurūpadiṣṭamārgeṇa siktaṃ vastraṃ śanairgraset ।
punaḥ pratyāhareccaitaduditaṃ dhautikarma tat ॥ 2.24 ॥ |

A strip of cloth about four fingers wide and 15 hastha long (1 hast = distance between the tip of the index finger to the elbow), is swallowed with water as per the instruction of the guru and then slowly and gently pulled back out. This is called Dhauti Karma.
