सञ्जय उवाचएवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशं गुडाकेशः परन्तप । न योत्स्य इति गोविन्दमुक्त्वा तूष्णीं बभूव ह ॥२- ९॥ |
sañjaya uvācaevamuktvā hṛṣīkeśaṃ guḍākeśaḥ parantapa । na yotsya iti govindamuktvā tūṣṇīṃ babhūva ha ॥2- 9॥ |
सञ्जय samjaya (nom. sg.), = samjaya, the narrator, minister to the blind king Dhrtarastra, to whom the battle of Kuruksetra is being described.;उवाच uvaca (3rd sg. perfect act. .*vac), = he said, he spoke.; एवम evam, = thus.; उक्त्वा uktva (gerund .*vac), = saying, having said, having addressed.; हृषीकेशं hṛṣīkeśaṃ (m. acc. sg.), = the Bristling Haired One, frequent epithet of Krishna.; गुडाकेशः guḍākeśaḥ (m. nom. sg.), = the Thick Haired One, epithet of Arjuna.; परन्तप paramtapa (m. voc. sg.), = O Scorcher of the Foe, epithet of warriors (here applied to King Dhrtarastra); न na, = not.; योत्स्य yotsye (rst sg. pr. future mid . .*yudh), = I will fight, I shall fight. (Samdhi changes final vowel from e to a before a vowel.); इति iti, = thus, often used to close a quotation.; गोविन्दम govindam (m. acc. sg.), = the Chief Cow herd, to the Chief of Cowherds, lit. "Cow Finder," epithet of Krishna. उक्त्वा uktva (gerund .*vac), = speaking, having spoken.;तूष्णीं tusnim (adv.), = silently.;बभूव babhuva (3rd sg. perf. act. .*bhU), he was, he became; ह ha (asseverative particle) = indeed, in truth. |
Sanjaya said: After addressing Hrishikesha, (master of the senses) thus,
Arjuna- the Conqueror of sleep, said to Lord Sri Krishna: "Govinda, I will
not fight" and became silent. ||2-9||
