Atmabodha,-An Error of MISAPPREHENSION, (S.-1, Ch.-5, V.-19)

व्यापृतेष्विन्द्रियेष्वात्मा व्यापारीवाविवेकिनाम् । दृश्यतेऽभ्रेषु धावत्सु धावन्निव यथा शशी ॥ १९॥

vyāpṛteṣvindriyeṣvātmā vyāpārīvāvivekinām । dṛśyate'bhreṣu dhāvatsu dhāvanniva yathā śaśī ॥ 19॥

1 Vyaa-priteshu indriyeshu aatmaa The Atman, observed through the active senses 2 vyaa-paaree iva avivekinaam; by the non-discriminating people, is as if active 3 drishyate abhreshu dhaavatsu in appearance; when the clouds move in the sky, 4 dhaavan iva yathaa shashee. it seems as though the moon were running!

An ignorant person thinks that the moon is moving whereas it is the clouds that are really moving. Similarly to the non- discriminating people, the Atma appears to be active when it is observed through the functions of the sense - organs.
