Tridosha - Three doshas

The tridosha are present all over the body, but their presence may manifest in some particular parts more than in others. If we divide the body into three parts, Kapha dosha dominates the upper chest, Pitta dominates the part between chest and navel, and Vata dominates the part below the navel to the pelvis. Each becomes dominant in succession during the beginning (Kapha), middle (Pitta) and final (Vata) phases of life, as well as during the phases of the day and night and also during the process of food digestion.

Commentary

This verse says there are three dosha centers in our body. The upper part of the chest, from the diaphragm up to the collarbone, is the area of Kapha, where the lungs and heart are the main organs there, and it is the main area of avalambaka kapha. Then there is an area between the diaphragm and the navel, where organs such as the liver, pancreas, spleen, stomach, duodenum, gall bladder, etc are located. This is an area of Pitta. The area from the navel to the anus, with organs such as the colon, bladder, ovaries, prostate, etc, is the area of Vatta.

Those are the three different centers of doshas. The tridosha are present all over the body as the energies responsible for life processes, but they do not manage all at the same time. For example, when digestion takes place, Kapha dominates first, it increases. In the second phase Pitta increases and in the third, Vatta is active. In the same way, during a lifetime there is Kapha that dominates in childhood, Pitta in the adult period and Vatta dominates in old age. An Ayurvedic practitioner must take into account that even though all doshas are present all the time, in a certain stage of a process some of doshas are naturally more active. Confrontation between doshas occurs, for example, if one were to go running right after eating a meal. Two different doshas would be active at the same time and would cause trouble (nausea).

A short example: There is a factory that produces Skoda Octavia cars. The first phase is about research and documentation, i.e., desiging what the cars will look like. The production lines do not work yet during this phase and the salesrooms are waiting for the cars. In the next phase production begins, the product documentation is approved, the designers are having a rest, but the salesrooms are still waiting. The factory is focused only on manufacturing at this stage. Finally, the last phase follows, when the cars are on the market, they are exhibited in salons, the production lines are slowing down and the businessmen start doing their job. All stages are important for the whole order, but each phase is active in its given time and place. Similarly, Vatta, Pitta, Kapha, even if they are all present in the body, will be more active in a given time and place.

Another example is what happens when we burn a candle. When the wax melts and solidifies after the candle goes out, that is the material record of the fact that the candle was burned. The end results of processes involve this kind of materialization.
