Andjana (oční kapky)

Daily use of Sauveera Andjana protects the eyes. The eyes are connected to the element of Agni Mahabhuta and collecting Kapha is a threat for Agni. Therefore, Rasanjana should be applied once a week for stravana (washing away the disturbed Kapha dosha.

Commentary

Andjana is a eye treatment using a preparation from antimony sulphide. The preparation is put on the lower eyelid. At first, it burns adnd they eyes start to water. Watering of the eyes is stravana (washing away the collected Kapha). Kapha protects the eyes from drying, but its excessive formation may cause eye diseases. Andjana was used in various forms for eyes maintenance 2,000 years ago. Andjana is a tradition known in the old civilizations as Egypt, Babylonia, Haddapa, where the eyes were covered with a black paste (we call it kajal) which contained pungent ingredients. Kajal served mostly for an aesthetic accentuation of eyes, but also for their freshness. Kapha could not collect and the eye fire was always fresh. Nowadays, andjana and kajal are replaced with various eye cosmetics which has nothing in common with Katu ras. Instead, there is a lot of chemicals and perfume which damage the eyes. This is sad, and according to the traditional Ayurveda the exe cosmetics should contain katu ras. It is best to renew the old formulas and incorporate them in the modern cosmetics. In India, kajal is still available and many women still use it.
