Treatment of mental disorders

The best treatment for Manasika Dosha (mental disorders) is the use of Dhee (intellect), Dhairya (patience) and Atmavigyana (knowledge of one's true essence).

Commentary

This brief verse reveals the essential key to the cure of human suffering in modern times. As we already know, illnesses first begin at the mental level and gradually materialize and manifest in the body. Today we call this psychosomatics. When the mind is healthy, most diseases automatically have no space to develop. In other words, mental disorders are the basic cause that unsettle the balance of the Tridosha and subsequently manifest in the tissues.

Baghbath lists three keys to removing the causes of a disease and maintaining good health in the human body. These are Dhee (intellect), which means to use one's thinking and to decide what to do in harmony with one's own interest. We have already mentioned that the mind may always decide according to passion, anger, desire, greed and euphoria, or the mind can refrain from acting on tha basis and think instead about the requirements of time and space, understand one's life role on earth in different situations and their consequences and behave accordingly. Usually, when the Dhee (intellect) is not used, the mind directs life in a wild, confused, greedy and selfish manner, incessantly provoking the Doshas into imbalance. In time, this takes effect as inconveniences on the material level in the tissues. For complete cure of a disease, Baghbath recommends peace of mind, calm, patience, use of the intellect, and knowing one's role in time and space.

Our liking/disliking is the mind, and figuring out what to do is done by our intellect, buddhi, which solves problems and figures out the steps to take. Both of these functions are playing on the field of Atma. When we reflect on this, it is the best medicine for mental disorders, which can be diagnosed and then healed. Identifying the characteristics (gunas) of the mind is key to this.

The concept of Dhairya involves detachment above all, not passionate involvement. When we are calm, we are able to comprehend what is going on. This is crucial to forbearance, patience and tolerance. It means the ability to remain calm despite suffering of any kind, to set aside one's own experiences. This is the requirement for being able to understand other people's states of mind, being able to observe and perceive what is there. When there is the ability to distinguish and proper detachment, then one can understand others. Once one achieves this, the only medicine for the mind is the mind itself. Medicines for mental problems cannot be physical - only awareness heals. Once this is understood, others can be guided until the understanding "clicks". The next level is that of the spiritual, which is where psychological problems can be healed.

It is our intelligence determines our maturity, not our chronological age, the degree to which our intelligence has been developed.
