samkhya sutra,-Vishayadhyaya, (S.-1, Ch.-1, V.-3)

प्रात्यहिक क्षुत्प्रतीकारवत् तत्प्रतीकार चेष्टनात् पुरुषार्थत्वं ।

prātyahika kṣutpratīkāravat tatpratīkāra ceṣṭanāt puruṣārthatvaṃ ।

A cycle of effort to achieve satisfaction is the action of the Doer (Purusha)

prātyāhika = daily, everyday; kṣut = hunger; pratīkāra = elimination of; vat = like that, similarly; tat = that; pratīkāra = elimination; ceṣṭanāt = effort for; puruṣa-artha-tvam = visible mater is also for the being (purusha-arth)

Just as hunger must be repeatedly eliminated everyday [by food], so the repeated effort to eliminate pain is also the action of the Doer.

____James R. Ballantyne, London 1885_____ [They state] that the soul's (Purusha) desire [the cessation of pain] from exertions and efforts for the obviation [of pain], as is the case with the obviation of daily hunger.

Komentář:

This emphasizes that mere observation is not enough to cure disease, but that action is required. Just seeing food would not alleviate hunger,  but eating food does. This is the action of the Purusha, and, like eating, it is a perpetual action. The hunger does not end and the eating must continue. The actor who is feeling the hunger and acting to alleviate it is Purusha, the Soul. These verses are intended to emphasize to the reader who the reader actually is. What is a person looking for in life? Who is the judge, who decides the goal and the rules in life?
