Commentary

I am telling you this humility and respect. We are passing on Ayurveda, which people received from the god Indra and from wise men. This is divine knowledge about healing. We are just the messengers, there is no influence here of our own invention or from our own personalities. How did Ayurveda come about? The wisest men in India met in the Himalayas for this enormous task. They observed how humankind was changing its way of life, how, instead of focusing on their duties of the present moment, people were beginning to live in their thoughts about the past and in their plans for the future. This disrupted the ability of the human body to heal itself and people began to be sick. The wise men decided to ask the god Indra for help. Sometimes Indra is described as the god of thunder, lighting, rain, etc. That was because people used to pray to him to change the weather and end natural catastrophes, but this is only one face of Indra. The god Indra is the god of all energy in the universe. He takes control of the movement of all the atoms and particles in the entire universe, in all of the galaxies. He takes control of the power of all of the atoms and elements. The wise men then chose from among them one who was able to bow down to Indra and ask him for help. The ascetic wise man Bharadvaja volunteered to ask the god Indra for his assistance and was chosen to do so.
